        PRE FORMED POND LINERS

There are two main types of this type of pool; vacuum-formed plastic, and glass fibre. While the former is cheaper the latter is durable, non-toxic and reasonably easy to install.

CHOOSING A SHAPE

While the surface shape of a pre-formed pool is of little concern, the correct internal structure is vital. With few exceptions the marginal shelves are narrow or non-existent. Such pools are hopeless for most aquatic plants. Those that have a deep area and a shallow end rather than a marginal shelf are usually the best. The only slight drawback is that all the marginal subjects have to be clustered in the shallow end.

INSTALLING THE POOL

Dig a hole of sufficient length, breadth and depth to accommodate the largest dimensions of the pool, the shallow end being supported on bricks. Ensure that the hole not only accommodates the pool, but allows sufficient space around the edge for proper back-filling.

Place the pool in the hole on a 25mm layer of sand, and carefully level it from end to end and side to side using a straight plank and spirit level, ensuring adequate support under the shallow end. At this stage the pool should not be level with the surrounding ground as with the steady pressure of back-filling it will steadily rise.

Thus start with the pool a couple of centimetres lower to allow for this.
Gradually back-fill the cavity with sharp sand, compacting it thoroughly, especially beneath any shelves. Plastic pools should be kept rigid by adding water as back-filling proceeds; this is not necessary with rigid glass fibre pools. Check the levels as you back-fill in case you have pushed the pool up while compacting the back-fill. Start stocking with plants a week or so later.

Trent Stone may be able to assist with pool friendly rockery and walling to make the installation complete.
