    BUTYL/POLYTHENE POOL LINERS

This is the most versatile pond building material. There are many different types available. One to suit every need and budget.

INSTALLING THE POOL

Work out the size of the liner you require carefully. Take the longest point and add on twice the maximum depth; then allow for an adequate surplus to ensure that the liner can be successfully secured. Add twice the depth to the maximum width and again allow a surplus to secure the liner when installed.

All liners can be treated in a similar manner. It is just the polythene kind that may present a few problems, mainly because of its lack of elasticity. In order to have as much flexibility as possible it is essential to spread out a polythene liner to soften it up in the sun.

After excavating the hole check that the top is level using a spirit level. Ensure that all sticks, stones and other objects that might damage the liner are removed. Spread a layer of sand over the base of the excavation. Polyester matting can also be used to provide a good base for the liner. Position the liner over the pool, making sure it overlaps the widest points equally and, with the liner draped loosely into the excavation, place a few bricks around the edge as anchors. Run water into the liner and as the level increases, ease the bricks off and reposition them to allow the liner to be taken into the excavation. As the pool fills, any wrinkles that appear in the liner should be carefully smoothed out or camouflaged, for once it is secured into place it will be
impossible to straighten out.

When full the top overlap should be trimmed and the liner secured to the ground before covering the edge with paving or turf. If you want to plant up to the edge, use inverted turf at the edge, as loose soil will soon be washed into the water. Stone or paving slab edges should be bedded in a mix of three parts sand to one part cement. As pool liners are not harmful to aquatic life, stocking with plants can begin after about a week.
