DESIGNING YOUR GARDEN
What do you want from your garden? The Room Outside. It’s a place to relax, a place to unwind, a place to enjoy. Somewhere for the kids to play, have a barbecue, entertain friends and relatives, hang out the washing, and soak up the sun. Whatever you want
to decide - do it first so that all your requirements can be incorporated into the master design.
SURVEYING
From the outset design your garden as you would eventually like it to be, even if for whatever reason your cannot complete it all
at the same time. It will save you having to do things twice or taking apart completed areas.
Make a scale plan of the garden on square paper, include as much detail as possible. Mark all the existing features, not
forgetting drains, manholes and that overhanging tree from next door. Note the shady areas and the areas where there is full
sun, gates, doors and any areas to which access is required. Can any neighbours overlook the garden? Are there any changes
in level?
PLANNING
Now decide what you want to keep and what you want to add.
Do you want a barbecue, a large lawn to play with the kids on, a vegetable garden or large borders which will require
a lot of care and attention? Be realistic when you draw your plan, you may need to compromise ( you can’t have a large lawn and a large patio in a small
garden). Don’t put the patio where it doesn’t get the sun, or the vegetable garden where it is over shadowed by that big tree next
door.
TRIAL
Before finalising the plan try it out. Mark out all the features on the ground using canes, pegs, sand, hosepipe, and string or whatever you have in the shed or house. Will the patio furniture fit onto the patio, can the window cleaner still reach the windows, will the kids take a short
cut across that shrub bed, will the greenhouse be behind the goal posts/wicket?
THE FINAL TOUCHES
Once you are happy with your design check the finer detail and the practicality of construction. If the patio is slightly larger or
smaller you could save cutting the paving. Now choose your materials, real stone
paving, or real STONE Walling to enhance the aesthetic beauty of your room outside.
