Uncharacteristically for a limestone Bulwell stone is very strong due to the rhombic crystal structure.

 Density & Crushing strength ;

  •   Dry Density                                   2.4 - 2.5 Mg/m3

  •   Crushing strength average      42 Mpa Parallel to Bedding

                                                                      30 Mpa Perpendicular to Bed

Note - Some results show Compressive Strengths as high as 100 MPa.

Testing - The material was extensively tested in 1988 by the Building Research Establishment and features in their report ‘Magnesium Limestone’s in the UK’ and BRE Digest 269. Its durability classification was ‘B’ showing its appropriate for all uses other than paving or steps. Tests have been completed by British Geological Survey in 1997 confirming :-
